Chapter Ten

Glenn stood his ground as Randall stormed down the corridor toward him.

“I haven’t got time for another one of your ruses,” Randall grunted. “You may have fooled everyone in town, but you won’t fool me.”

“That was no ruse,” Glenn said. “I do know where you’ll find Arnold.”

Randall stopped two paces in front of Glenn and pointed at him, his face reddening by the moment.

“Glenn, I only just decided not to hand you over to Emerson for the bounty, but this town is mighty worked up and I will change my mind if you waste any more of my time. So tell me what you know, now!”

Glenn raised his chin to avoid gulping and moistened his dry throat. Anything he said would betray the fact that while he was hiding in the cabinet he’d formed only the vaguest of theories as to where Arnold would be.

If he were to voice it, he guessed Randall would either not believe him or hit him for daring to suggest it. Either way, he wouldn’t help him leave town.

Glenn shook his head. “I won’t do that.”

“Then I’ll leave you here to die.”

Randall turned and walked to the stairs and down them. Glenn broke into a run. He hurried along the corridor and then pounded down the stairs after Randall, the noose that still dangled from the ceiling catching his eye.

“We can work together,” Glenn said as Randall reached the bottom of the stairs.

“I don’t have partners.” Randall continued walking toward the wide open doorway, but he stopped before the toppled door and lowered his voice. “Just tell me what you know. I’ll do the rest.”

“Randall, we need each other.” Glenn loitered in the shadows at the bottom of the stairs in case anyone happened to go past the door outside. “You have the firepower and the ability to track men down. I have information about this town and its people.”

“You have information that’s fifteen years out of date.”

“Only fifteen-year-old information will solve what’s happening here.”

Randall straightened up and walked into the doorway. He nodded and took in the noose before he faced Glenn.

“Do you know something, Glenn? You’re right, but the trouble is, I’m just a man who brings them in for the bounty. I don’t need your kind of trouble, so I’d start running now if I were you.”

“Without my help that trouble will still follow you and you’ll never find Arnold. Is that what you want?”

In the open doorway, Randall sighed and closed his eyes for a moment. Ten minutes later, Glenn shuffled around inside Hop’s clothes. Hop was a bulky man so the clothes dangled off his lean frame, but although this disguise would fool only casual observers, he reckoned some form of disguise was his best chance of getting out of town.

In case that failed, he reluctantly accepted that the gun he’d borrowed from Hop would have to do the rest. While Glenn stayed in the shadows in the reception room, Randall left the hotel first and collected his horse along with Hop’s mount.
